Time-lapse video shows construction of Crossrail rooftop gardens

A mesmerising time-lapse video has emerged of the construction of the new Crossrail rooftop gardens in London.

The short clip shows the construction of the Crossrail garden, designed to evoke an old clipper inspired by the local areas maritime history, atop the Crossrail Place in Canary Wharf.

Over the course of a minute it is possible to see the garden’s construction. The concrete building blocks of paths and supports are gradually covered over by sand and soil in preparation for the plants.

As these arrive, the previously sparse and barren location is transformed into a tropical hub, completed by small statutes and finishing touches in the final seconds of the clip.

The building is the first part of the multi-billion pound Crossrail network project, and will eventually house the concourse, platforms and ticket half or the new Canary Wharf station, which it is hoped will be operational by 2018.

The seven storey building and garden opens to the public today, and can be accessed free of charge and without booking.
