Any Londoner who is feeling the misery of the hottest July day since records began might think to pop down to this south London street.

Engineers were called to reports of a burst water pipe in Mitcham Lane in Tooting, south west London which was flooding the road Wednesday morning.

As temperatures soared to 34C in the capital on, Miklos Kiss tweeted this picture of a jet of water shooting up into the air.

The subsequent flooding caused chaos for commuters in the area with witnesses taking to Twitter to tell people to avoid the area. One woman, Sian Rowland, tweeted:

In a statement to the Standard, a spokesperson for Thames Water: “We know this is the perfect day for a new water feature however we’re sending out an engineer to see what’s happened and to try and get the water under control as soon as possible."
