JAN TIMMAN kept alive his hopes of a world chess championship challenge by defeating Nigel Short in the 11th game of the Candidates' Final in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Spain, yesterday.

Short now leads 6-5 with three games left to play. The game, which had been adjourned on Tuesday, was resumed yesterday in a technically difficult endgame.

Short showed the fruits of his night's work by rattling off the first 14 moves of yesterday's session in a couple of minutes. However, Timman then came up with an idea that Short's team of analysts had apparently not considered. Short thought for more than 20 minutes on his 75th move, but 10 moves later found himself unable to prevent one of Timman's pawns from marching through to its queening square.

In the three games left, Short will twice have the advantage of the white pieces. He needs 1 1/2 points to win the match and the right to challenge Garry Kasparov for the world title.

The twelfth game will be played today. Here are the moves of game 11:
