Uxbridge by-election date set

The by-election for the marginal Tory Uxbridge constituency in west London, the first of this Parliament, will take place on 31 July.

Opposition business managers yesterday moved the writ in the Commons for the contest to replace the late Sir Michael Shersby, who died less than a week after the general election, when he defended the seat with a majority of just 724.
