The Sochi 2014 men's 500m speed skating final has been reimagined as a level from Mario Kart: Double Dash, but this is no ordinary YouTube edit.

You might be expecting some N64 era backing music, maybe a banana skin or two photoshopped in, but no, creators TimTimFed went the whole hog and inserted green shells, lightning bolts, a whacking great Chain Chomp and more.

The finalists are seen skating through item boxes in the clip, before laying bloody waste to their competitors with a variety of classic Mario Kart weapons.

The infamous spiny blue shell even makes an appearance, ruining everyone's race in the final straight as it is prone to do.

Speed skating has not proven as ripe for comedy as curling at Sochi 2014however, which has been the subject of numerous YouTube videos over the past couple of weeks including this one sending up the ear-splitting shrieks of the women's competition.
