$1bn bid for tank monopoly

General Dynamics bid $1bn (pounds 625m) for the military-vehicle producer United Defence LP, an acquisition that would face a major monopoly decision by the Clinton administration, because if General Dynamics succeeded it would become the sole US maker of tanks.
