Christians protest against Egyptian violence

Hundreds of Egyptians demonstrated in Cairo yesterday to protest the Muslim-Christian clashes, which left 12 people dead a day earlier.

Demonstrators said they feared some in Egypt were seeking to create an Islamic state that would marginalise Christians, who make up about 10 per cent of Egypt's nearly 80 million population. The demonstration came as authorities detained 23 Egyptians, including two blamed for sparking the riots late on Saturday, when two churches were set ablaze and fears grew that the nation's pro-democracy uprising, which toppled Hosni Mubarak in February, could descend into bloody sectarian strife.
