Thousands of people took to the streets of the capital Bamako yesterday in support of a military takeover and a new constitution drawn up by Mali's coup leaders.

"It's the first time I'm really proud of Mali and of Africa," said Niamoye Toure, a doctor.

The watching world was not so impressed. The Economic Community of West African States suspended Mali's membership and is sending five presidents to try to "restore constitutional order".
