Ahmaud Arbery: Man who filmed jogger's shooting arrested on murder charge

William Bryan charged along with Gregory and Travis McMichael in February killing after footage went viral

The man who filmed the fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery has been arrested and charged with murder, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has announced.

William Bryan's arrest follows the February killing of Mr Arbery, a black man, by a white father and son who armed themselves before following him in their truck after they saw him jogging in a neighbourhood.

Gregory McMichael and his son Travis McMichael were arrested more than two months later for murder and aggravated assault after a mobile phone video of the killing had leaked online and sparked an international outrage and allegations of a modern-day lynching of Mr Arbery.

Mr Bryan also was charged with criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment. He will be booked into the Glynn County Jail.

On Tuesday, agents with the Georgia bureau leading the case executed a search warrant of the McMichaels's home.

In the footage from 23 February, the 50-year-old man who filmed what appears to be the McMichaels shooting Mr Arbery with a shotgun at close range in the middle of the street doesn't intervene or appear to stop the men from killing him.

Surveillance footage from a nearby home captured a man who appears to be Mr Arbery peering into a neighbourhood construction.

The McMichaels said they believed Mr Arbery was burglarising the house before they chased him for several minutes before his death. Video from the construction site shows the person leaving empty-handed.

The property owner's attorney told The Independent that nothing was stolen from the property and that "the only crime that the homeowner has seen captured on video was the senseless killing" of Mr Arbery.

Mr Bryan's attorney Kevin Gough told reporters this week that he has requested authorities and Mr Arbery's family attorneys to "clear his name".

"Take the target off his back," Mr Gough said.

The Arbery family's attorneys have called for Mr Bryan's arrest "from the very beginning of this process".

In a statement, they said: "His involvement in the murder of Mr Arbery was obvious to us, to many around the country and after their thorough investigation, it was clear to the GBI as well."
