A British man has been arrested by police in the Caribbean over the death of his wife, after her body was found buried in a shallow grave on Grenada.
Alexander Clack is being detained on a charge of non-capital murder, meaning the death penalty cannot be considered if there is a conviction, the Associated Press quoted the Royal Grenada Police Force as saying.
His wife Nixiann Downes-Clack's body was discovered on Friday, four days after relatives on the island reported her missing. A post-mortem examination conducted on Sunday revealed she died of blunt force trauma and asphyxiation by strangulation, it said.
Police said Clack led investigators to his wife's remains in Mt. Moritz, a village just north of the capital, St. George's.
The 27-year-old woman was "suspected to have been the victim of domestic abuse and gender violence," said Delma Thomas, Grenada's minister of social development, housing and gender affairs. The couple reportedly have a two-year-old daughter together.
Clack was born and raised in London but lives in Grenada, AP reports.
The Foreign Office is providing consular assistance. A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We were informed of the arrest of a British national on June 20 in Grenada. We are providing consular assistance."
