A 4.0 magnitude earthquake has been reported in Fremont, California, outside of San Francisco.

The earthquake, measuring an exact magnitude of 3.98, was felt in San Francisco at 2.41am local time (10.41am BST).

Reports of the earthquake came as citizens were woken up from the shaking. There was little damage and no one is believed to be injured.

California has 23.4 per cent of all earthquakes in the US and has reported 6,614 in the past year.

The largest one in the last 12 months was a 6.0 magnitude quake in American Canyon in August when a tsunami bulletin was issued.
