Canadian mother demands 'white doctor' to see her son

A white Canadian woman has been filmed at a walk-in medical clinic in Ontario loudly demanding that her child see a white doctor who speaks English.

The woman can be seen loudly demanding that her son, who she said was experiencing chest pains, see a doctor immediately, but only if they are white. She proclaims in the video that she is being persecuted against in the medical facility because she is white.

“I saw a doctor that was not white that did not help my kid”, the woman says during the nearly four minute long video in which she is seen storming up to the front counter and accosting the receptionist. “I would like to see a white doctor. You're telling me there isn't one white doctor in this whole entire building”?

Other patients, stunned and angered by the woman’s racist outburst, urged her to go to a nearby hospital if she wasn’t happy with the services available where they were. They note that speaking English isn’t an exclusive ability of white people, and that anybody who is administering medical care in the facility would be licenced and qualified to do so, regardless of race.

“Your child clearly has more issues with you being his mother than him needing to see a doctor. You are extremely rude and racist”, one woman is seen telling the woman in the video.

CBC Toronto, which first reported on the video, was unable to identify the woman in the video for comment. Hitesh Bhardwaj, the man who recorded the video, told that news outlet that he felt compelled to capture the scene because: “This is bad, this is inappropriate and shouldn't go unnoticed”.

Cheryl Teelucksingh, a sociology professor at Ryerson University, said that the incident is an example of “everyday racism” that has seen a resurgence in Canada lately. She said that some are noting that the election of Donald Trump in the US seems to have opened up the gates for these sorts of incidents, with people feeling more comfortable expressing concerns that they normally wouldn’t feel are acceptable.

Ms Teelucksingh also noted that perceived multiculturalism in Canada may play a role in this sort of event, with some white people assuming that racial minorities are already treated equally in the country.

“I think people are feeling that there's a little bit more space now to question who's in positions of power, who's actually getting the jobs, those sorts of things”, she said.

The woman’s son was later treated by a doctor at the clinic, and no allegations of threat or assault were brought forward to police once they arrived. The clinic, Rapid Access to Medical Specialists, said that it “is proud of the quality of medical care provided at this clinic”, but wouldn’t comment on this specific incident.
