Protesters have shut down a highway on the route to a Donald Trump rally in Arizona.

The protesters parked their cars and trucks across the highway to block traffic near Fountain Hills, around 30 miles outside the city of Phoenix.

Some of the trucks were towed away by police.

Mr Trump is scheduled to attend rallies in Fountain Hills and Tuscon ahead of Tuesday's Republican primary in Arizona.

He was forced to abandon a rally in Chicago last Saturday after violent clashes erupted ahead of the event.

The Republican frontrunner has found himself at the centre of mounting controversy over violence at his rallies.
