The daughter of the Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards has been arrested in New York after painting graffiti on the wall of a convent and being found in possession of marijuana.

Theodora Richards had daubed "T loves A," using a heart symbol for love, in scarlet paint on the whitewashed wall of St Anthony's Convent in the SoHo district of Manhattan.

An official said that when she was approached by plain clothes officers, Miss Richards, 25, told them the initials stood for Theodora and Alexandra, her younger sister. The police subsequently searched the model and art student, finding a number of white pills which they believe to be hydrocodone, as well as cannabis.

The official said Miss Richards told the officers she had thought the pills were Xanax when she bought them from a dealer, before saying: "I hope I don't get in trouble for this".

Last night, she remained in custody, waiting to be released on bail, after being charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of marijuana, making graffiti and possession of a graffiti-making instrument.

Miss Richards is the daughter of Patti Hansen, Mr Richard's wife, and has modelled for Burberry and Tommy Hilfiger.
