Family in shock after Briton shot in US bar

By Tom Morgan and Lauren Turner, PA

A British father shot dead in a US bar was just "in the wrong place, at the wrong time", his family said tonight.

Tom Reeve, 28, from Maidenhead, Berkshire, had only stopped in Amarillo while travelling through the US "because he liked the song" by Tony Christie, relatives said.

A statement issued from the family's home said: "Tom was a much loved son, brother and father who will be missed by the whole family and very many friends."

Teetotal Mr Reeve, who had been on a road-trip from San Francisco to Florida with two friends, died of a wound to the torso after a masked gunman walked in to the Spotted Pony bar on Thursday night (US time).

Speaking of their shock in a statement, relatives said: "Tom had lived all his life in Maidenhead, had played in a boys football team from age 7 to 17 and latterly played in a bowling league. Although he worked for many years in the licensed trade he was, in fact, teetotal.

"He was on a holiday with two of his friends, driving from San Francisco to Florida and had chosen Amarillo as a stopping place because he liked the song! He was just in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

"He loved life, was always happy and optimistic about the future. He was generous, kind and always saw the best in every one he met. He adored his 9 month old daughter, Tabitha, and was a devoted father.

"The whole family are in shock and will be issuing no further statements at this time."

At least he will get whats coming to him in Texas. I am very sorry for the family, but this must give them some small measure of comfort.

Oh yeah, "justice." What the hell does this mean? Comfort because some douche is dead? "Get whats coming to him"? Why don't we just say, anyone, who ever makes an offense, gets put to death? I mean, its only a question of degree, to go from one criminal to the next. And, of course, a good, law abiding citizen such as yourself, could never be persuaded into crime. But once one does, might as well not give them a second chance. Right? Forget about forgiveness, forget about compassion for the weak. And just who will get what's coming to him? The "masked gunman"? Knowing Texas, they'll probably just arrest some innocent (though this would only be relative, I mean, everyone's guilty of something, right?) black or latino and put him on death row. Is that the justice we want? Is that the justice we seek? Are we really so hell-bent on vengeance that we're willing to forsake any and all morality?
And don't get me wrong, I am sorry that innocent people get killed, but we all play a role. "Let him without sin cast the first stone."

jah3... does the UK have a death penalty? Why assume that because Texas chooses to exercise capital punishment, it will be a comfort to Tom Reeve's family? His killer's death will not bring him back. Maybe if Texas had gun control, as the UK does, Tom Reeve would still be on his way home. Hopefully, God will give his loved ones more comfort than Texas' death penalty will.

My heart goes out the to family of Tom Reeve. Nothing's going to bring him back and executing this scumbag is little comfort to his family, but it's better than letting his kind live. With DNA, fingerprints and eyewitnesses evidence there will be little doubt who did it.
"The Associated Press said Cisneros was arrested on a warrant and no bond was set"
It's illegal for a some with a warrant to have a firearm or for that matter to be on the streets. So why would he care about gun laws? People think because "minorities" do a disproportion number of crimes somehow it's discrimination, think again. We have special hate crime laws that give white people (yes your colonial cousins) more time for doing a crime against your beloved "minorities". Wake up UK someday your wonderful minorities might decide "god told them to kill non-believers, I bet you'll wish you were armed....

usnative...I agree that the US should have gun control, but it does not. The lack of available guns in Britain does not seem to stop the horrible crimes committed daily by a feral underclass that results in them getting sentences that amount to a slap on the wrist. You don't even know if this young man's family believes in God.

You have to understand in America that freedom of religion does not include those who don't believe in God. If you cannot pass their moral litmus test, which has nothing to do with morality, then you are an unamerican, and generally worthless. So I doubt, unfortunately, that the Texan who loves his death penalty so much would care for the family if they didn't believe in God. Here, in America, tolerance and freedom is dead.

It's sad that he went to Texas. I am from Massachusetts and would do nothing more than fly over that god-forsaken heathen, backwards, crazy state. The whole south frightens me with its hypocritical bible thumpers, gay-bashers, and the KKK. (All very much alive in that part of the world) It's like stepping back into the dark ages.

They cry that they pay too much in taxes and don't want healthcare for all, but in the end we pay much more in taxes than the flyover states, so why should they complain when we welcome the reforms? We pay and they get the money. Most of the federal aid goes to those supposedly "god-fearing" states. Such hypocrisy. They are the least moral of all. Lord knows it's over 50 years that we are behind the rest of the entire world in almost every aspect. We will pay for guns and bombs and junk f-16s, but education and healthcare? Why would we support LIFE, LIBERTY, AND FREEDOM, when we can support DEATH AND DESTRUCTION.

The lesson here...if you come to the states, stay in the Northeast and the far west coast. The rest is not worth the danger. They aren't kidding when they say "TEXAS, it's like a whole other country." They forgot to add "A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY". I take that back, a 3rd world country is probably safer.

While I agree with your sentiments about Texas and the rest of the South, I lived in Massachusetts for several years and I can tell readers who may not have had such an experience that white trash, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness are not found only in the bible-thumping southern states. Massachusetts is shockingly full of such ugly people. I often have said since living there that it would be a lovely place if most of the native people would leave. Just about the only decent people in Massachusetts are immigrants and people that moved there from other places originally to study. http://theunpeople.blogspot.com/

How many race riots have you lived thought? I live in the LA area and I've survived 3, so don't tell me about tolerance. I'm not against publicly funded heath care, I'm against bills being written by lobbyist and not read by our elected officials or public first. We need to show we can cut cost and then make a decision what to cut to pay for it. As far as the war goes if we pulled out yesterday that would be soon enough for me. I pay half of my imcome in taxes

Sounds like Reeve tried to fight back. Brits have a bad habit of doing that with armed people. It never ends well for them and only exposes them as rather thick.
