The Mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, revealed yesterday that he and his wife of 16 years were to seek a legal separation, adding fresh tumult to his race for the Senate against Hillary Rodham Clinton.

His face taut with emotion, the Mayor, left, made the announcement at his daily news conference with city reporters. "I am very sad and I feel terrible," he said. Only two weeks ago Mr Giuliani stunned supporters by revealing he had been diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer.

The personal upheavals of the Mayor have now cast a cloud of doubt on his bid for the Senate. Mr Giuliani's wife, Donna Hanover, is an actress and TV journalist. They have two children, aged 14 and 10.
