Giuliani's daughter accused of shoplifting $100 of make-up from New York store
Friday 06 August 2010
The daughter of the former mayor of New York City, Rudolph Giuliani, was arrested for shoplifting at a beauty store.
Police said Caroline Giuliani, 20, a student at Harvard University, was seen on security video taking five items of make-up worth more than $100 at a branch of Sephora in Manhattan. Store managers called the police but later declined to press charges. However, the officers arrested Miss Giuliani for petty theft, according to a spokesman for the New York Police Department.
She was taken from the shop at East 86th Street to the 19th Precinct police station on Wednesday. She emerged at about 7.15pm, wearing black trousers and a red sweater, and quickly got into a car with her mother without responding to reporters' questions.
The Manhattan District Attorney's office is reviewing the case to see if Miss Giuliani will be prosecuted. A court date has been set for 31 August. A spokeswoman for Mr Giuliani said the case was a personal matter and asked the media to respect his daughter's privacy.
Caroline Giuliani is the younger of the former mayor's two children with his ex-wife Donna Hanover, a television reporter and actress. She is reportedly estranged from her prosecutor-turned-politican father.
In 2007, when Mr Giuliani was seeking the Republican presidential nomination, Caroline Giuliani listed herself as a member of Barack Obama's Facebook group, saying that she supported his candidacy.
However, she left the group after an online magazine sent her an enquiry about it and she did not make any comment about the presidential race.
