The Uruguayan Senate voted on a government-sponsored bill legalizing the production and sale of marijuana. The bill has already been approved by the Chamber of Deputies and parliament's upper house, and makes Uruguay the first country in the world to regulate the cultivation and distribution of the soft drug.

The bill allows adults to buy up to 40 grams of marijuana per month from chemists' shops, or to grow up to six cannabis plants, if they register on a database of users.
