Police in Texas are investigating the death of a toddler found burned to death in an oven.

Houston police say 19-month-old J’zyra Thompson and her three young siblings were left alone in the house while their mother was at work.

Two of the children are three and the oldest is five.

Detectives have said they believe the children were playing with the oven when something went wrong.

Emergency services were called, but the girl was dead by the time the police arrived.

According to the Mail Online, the four children had been left in the care of their mother’s boyfriend when she went to work, but were alone when when the incident happened.

J’zyra’s mother and her boyfriend have been questioned by police but no charges have been filed so far.

The three surviving children have been taken into protective custody.

J’zyra’s grandmother, Gina Dennis, told local news station KHOU she did not understand why the babies were left alone.

The girl’s great-uncle, Jessie Braden, said: "I just need to know what happened? What really happened?

"So something like this don’t happen no more."

A GoFundMe page as been set up by J'zyra's aunt to pay for funeral costs.
