Liz Cheney, the daughter of the former Vice-President Dick Cheney, is abandoning her attempt to win a seat in the Senate, according to reports.

Ms Cheney cited “serious health issues” in her family as the reason for her decision to leave the Republican Wyoming Senate primary, according to The New York Times.

Her effort to replace Senate veteran Mike Enzi angered many Republicans, and her campaign faced a number of problems.

In November, Ms Cheney said she opposed gay marriage, starting a public feud with her sister, Mary, who is a married lesbian.
