At least seven people were killed in the first mass shooting in the United States this year when a man burst into the offices of a Massachusetts internet consulting firm yesterday and opened fire. There were also reports of multiple injuries.

Police confirmed the shooting had taken place at the offices of Edgewater Technology, which is located in Wakefield, about 30 minutes north of Boston. While there was no official confirmation on fatalities medical workers said that the rampage had left at least seven people dead. One witness said: "The gunman went postal." Armed police wearing bullet-proof vests descended on the brick office building, combing through it. They later said that they had a man in custody, said to be in his forties.

The attack took place at about noon. Boxing Day is not a national holiday in America but many companies give their workers an extra day off after Christmas. There was nofurther information on the identity of the gunman or what might have motivated his assault. One witness suggested that the man had been a disgruntled employee.

After yet another massacre of civilians, fresh questions are bound to be asked about gun control in America and its gun violence scourge. While President Bill Clinton has pressed hard for new restrictions on gun ownership, little headway has been made in lowering the numbers of guns in circulation. The gun lobby fully expects president-elect George W Bush to be less aggressive in pursuing gun laws.
