Video surveillance footage has captured the horrific moment a school bus driver was shot after a car accident occurred on a snowy highway in Minneapolis.

A surveillance camera recorded an incident when a Toyota driving in front of a pick-up truck and a school bus suddenly stopped amid slow-moving traffic on the merging of Interstate 35W and 94, before its driver hopped out of the car and opened fire at the school bus driver

The police said the suspected gunman is Kenneth Lilly, 31.

Although the video footage is grainy, it does appear to show the driver walking up to the school bus and firing bullets, and then walking over to the bus door to fire two more shots.

Miraculously, the police said the bus driver was hit in the head but the wounds from the shooting were not life-threatening. He underwent surgery.

No students were harmed from the attack.

In the video, the gunman appears to be on the phone following shooting. As CBS News noted, he appears to be wearing a security guard uniform.

Moments later, a Minnesota State Patrol officer arrives at the scene. The gunman places his hands up. He is cuffed before being walked to the door of the bus and being placed in the back of the squad car.

Mr Lilly, the alleged gunman, has not been charged yet.

The police called his alleged attack “reckless.”

“This raises immense concern on so many levels,” Minneapolis Police spokesperson John Elder told ABC News. “The fact that someone is shooting into a school bus, the fact that you’re on a freeway where you have vehicles that are literally stranded because of the weather. You don’t have a clear back drop for any of these round. This is mind numbing.”

State patrol officers reported finding a weapon on Mr Lilly.

The police are still investigating the case, including what events led to the shooting.
