A man crawled to safety after being trapped in his car with his dead girlfriend for three days.

Kevin Bell lost control of his SUV in south-east Indiana before driving down an embankment and colliding with a tree, according to the Associated Press.

The 39-year-old suffered such severe injuries to his legs that he was initially unable to move, but managed to get to the roadside before being found by state troopers on Tuesday.

His girlfriend Nikki Reed, 37, who was sitting in the passenger seat, died instantly.

Ms Reed’s daughter, Brooklyn, said her mother had been heading home to her youngest son’s birthday party.

Friends and family tried for three days to track her down, but were eventually told by authorities she had passed away.

Brooklyn described the ordeal on a YouCaring page to raise money for her mother’s funeral.

“She died instantly," she wrote.

"I don't know what happened or how it happened. All I know is that I want this to not be true, I just wish it was a dream!”

"I love my mom so much. I wish she was still here so I can hug her and tell her I love her one more time.”

Mr Bell has been taken to hospital and authorities are still investigating the incident.
