A pregnant 14-year-old US citizen was shot by Mexican police during a high-speed car chase near the border state of Tamaulipas, the local government said on Tuesday.
Mexican authorities are now investigating the incident, which took place in the northern city of Reynosa on the Texas border.
The girl and her friend were pulling away from a local store in a pick-up truck when the driver allegedly ignored an order to halt and sped off, court documents said.
Police chased the vehicle and shot at its tires during the chase. When police reached the truck after it stopped, the male passenger had fled and the girl was sitting inside wounded.
The girl, who is four months pregnant, and her unborn child are understood to be out of danger.
The US Embassy in Mexico said it was aware of reports that an American citizen had been shot in Reynosa, but could not provide any further information.
The incident comes as inquiries continue into the deaths of three siblings who went missing on 13 October from the Mexican city of Matamoros. Their bodies were found in a rural area close to the city on 29 October.
