When military veteran Tyler Jeffries got the idea to propose to this girlfriend, he wanted to make sure he had some well-wishers to hand.

Who better then, than two former presidents who were present as Mr Jeffries popped the question to Lauren Lilly. With ex-presidents George HW Bush and George W Bush looking on, thankfully Ms Lilly said “yes”.

Mr Jeffries lost both legs in October 2012 while serving in Afghanistan with the US Army. On Monday, he got down on one keen at the Bush family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine.

The war veteran posted a video of the moment on Facebook, along with a thank-you message to his supporters.

“I can’t thank you all enough for being so great through my recovery,” he wrote.

“It’s people like you all that make this country great. ‘I’m truly blessed to have such a great group of friends and family. Thank you all.”

The senior Mr Bush, still wearing a neck brace from a recent fall, posted a message on Twitter that read: “Congratulating Tyler Jeffries and Lauren Lilly on their engagement and wishing them a lifetime of joy together.”
