New York man charged with killing wife admits he tried to sell his teen daughter into marriage
'Some Mexican law firm can handle it, make sure it gets done properly'
Rod Colvin was been charged with the 2009 murder of Shele Danishefsky, his estranged wife. Now, he's accused of another heinous crime.
The 42-year-old unemployed stockbroker was also caught on tape arranging a marriage between his 13-year-old daughter and a man in Mexico, the New York Daily News reports.
"Some Mexican law firm can handle it, make sure it gets done properly,” he could be heard saying on tape during a court appearance.
“The defendant comes up with a plan to kidnap his 13-year-old daughter, take her to Mexico, and pay some Mexican $10,000 to marry her so that she’ll no longer be a minor,” prosecutor Matthew Bogdanos said on Monday. The prosecution believes that Mr Colvin intended to marry his daughter so he could have complete access to his former wife's fortune. The former couple was still legally married when Ms Danishefsky, 47, was found dead in her bathtub in 2009.
However, Mr Colvin’s lawyer Robert Gottlieb argued that his client was just attempting to ensure his daughter’s safety.
“He did something that looking back even Mr Covlin would say obviously he shouldn’t have done, but it was not, again, money... it was to protect his children,” Attorney Gottlieb said.
Mr Colvin was charged with second-degree murder just weeks before he was able to legally claim his estranged wife’s $4 million estate.
