She once described herself as "a very committed wife," wryly adding: "I ought to be committed, too, for being married so many times."
But Elizabeth Taylor may nonetheless be preparing to ignore the lessons of the past by becoming a blushing Hollywood bride - for the ninth time.
The frail 78-year-old screen siren is reportedly engaged to her longstanding personal companion Jason Winters, a Los Angeles-based talent agent – nearly three decades her junior. Mr Winters, 49, runs Sterling Winters Management, a show-business firm whose clients include Janet Jackson, the sister of Dame Elizabeth's late friend Michael Jackson. The couple have attended public events together in recnet years, though they were initially described as friends rather than lovers.
That changed last year, though, when Dame Elizabeth gave an interview to Liz Smith, the Queen bee of American gossip columnists, in which she described Winters, who at the time was widely believed to be gay, as: "one of the most wonderful men I've ever known", adding "that's why I love him".
News of their potential nuptials broke on Friday, when US Weekly magazine quoted a "source close to the couple" saying: "It's no secret that they've been together forever and are in love, so it wouldn't be a surprise if they were engaged. Right now they are keeping it between them."
At the weekend Dame Elizabeth's agent, Dick Guttman, appeared to give an implicit thumbs-up to the report, telling the TV show Access Hollywood: "We generally don't respond to queries regarding her relationship status, but it is well known and documented that they have been together for some time."
Heading up the aisle once more would certainly be in character for the British-born actress, whose previous husbands include her Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? co-star Richard Burton and the hotel magnate Conrad Hilton. Despite her advancing years, she maintains a busy social calendar and is often spotted in her wheelchair, on the dance-floor of West Hollywood nightclubs.
Though osteoporosis, combined with a heart problem, have prevented Elizabeth Taylor from appearing in a film for 15 years, she still makes millions of dollars through her perfume line.Reuse content
