New York police officers reportedly gunned down a man in Midtown Manhattan after he allegedly attacked an officer with a meat cleaver.

The incident took place outside Penn Station when officers returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times.

NYPD was not immediately available to comment on details of the case, and did not confirm reports about the suspect's weapon.

ABC News cited a police source who said the suspect was transported to hospital in critical condition while two officers had non-life-threatening injuries. One was struck in the head with the weapon and another hit by glancing friendly fire.

Authorities have closed the area at 32nd Street and Broadway, outside Madison Square Garden and Penn Station, as investigators make their way to the scene.

Witnesses are posting images of a crowded intersection full of police amidst the turmoil at the beginning of New York City rush hour.
