US boosts number of armed air marshals

The US has increased the number of armed undercover air marshals on flights to and from the UK and stepped up security at its airports nationwide in the wake of the terrorist activity.

"We will be doing some elevated air marshal work and some other activities with respect to UK travel," said Michael Chertoff, the Homeland Security Secretary, yesterday. Protection is also being stepped up at America's public transport hubs as millions get on the move for the 4 July holiday.

Air marshals are trained to blend in with other passengers on board aircraft and to recognise unusual behaviour. They are also selected for their skill at using handguns at close quarters.

As it increases security, the US is also concerned about the "visa waiver" programme that allows British and other European passport holders unrestricted entry. A terror threat assessment by New York City officials maintains that up to 150 British passport holders have travelled to fight in Iraq and some may have returned and formed sleeper cells.

The department of Homeland Security also seeks unspecified tougher rules covering passports, passenger watch lists and general airport security.
