The execution last month of Troy Davis has helped to push support for the death penalty in the US down to a 39-year low, according to a new poll.

Conducted in the days after his death, the survey shows 61 per cent of Americans support capital punishment, down from 64 per cent a year ago and a high of 80 per cent in 1994.
