Hillary Clinton is a 'bigot', Donald Trump declares in latest attempt to court voters of colour

The comment comes amid dismal polling from black and Latino voters

Hillary Clinton is a “bigot”, according to comments made by Donald Trump, as he attempts to deflect similar accusations of racism that have plagued his campaign since its launch.

Mr Trump made the remarks during a joint appearance with Brexit leader Nigel Farage in Jackson, Mississippi, to 15,000 supporters.

“Hillary Clinton is a bigot who sees people of colour only as votes, not as human beings worthy of a better future,” he shouted to the crowd. “She’s going to do nothing for African Americans. She’s going to do nothing for the Hispanics. She’s only going to take care of herself, her husband, her consultants, her donors – these are the people she cares about.”

“She doesn’t care about what her policies have done to your communities,” he continued. “She doesn’t care.”

One supporter who stood behind Mr Trump on the stage appeared to gasp at the comment before applauding.

Ms Clinton responded to the remark in an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper Wednesday night.

“Oh, Anderson, it reminds me of that great saying that Maya Angelou had, that when someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time,” she said. “And Donald Trump has shown us who he is. And we ought to believe him. He is taking a hate movement mainstream.”

Mr Trump made the comment in a week-long effort to appeal to black voters after an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll placed him at roughly 1 per cent of the demographic.

However, his new initiative has been criticised as a ploy to apply to a broader range of white conservatives.

In his speeches to black voters in the US, Mr Trump has painted their communities in broad, often stereotypical strokes, basically asking them to roll the dice and choose him.

“What do you have to lose by trying something new, like Trump,” he said during a Saturday appearance before a predominantly white audience in Virginia. “You’re living in your poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58 per cent of your youth is unemployed – what the hell do you have to lose?”
