After Texas Senator Ted Cruz came in last place on the Republican side at the New York primary, one fellow senator had little sympathy.

Responding to his campaign email which listed four “steep sacrifices” Mr Cruz said he had made to run for president, the Senator of Massachusetts posted a series of disparaging tweets about the “whining” candidate.

Senator Elizabeth Warren responded: “Are you kidding me, @TedCruz? We’re supposed to pity you because trying to be the leader of the free world is hard?! 2 words: Boo hoo.”

Responding to his claims that he had lost out on sleep, personal time, time with his family and he that he faced a “constant barrage” of attacks, Ms Warren responded to each point with a tweet, outlining the struggles of working people and how Mr Cruz’s policies made these people’s sacrifices even more difficult.

“Working people work more, get paid less, can’t save, get mistreated, struggle with illness & family - but they don’t whine,” she added.

Mr Cruz came in third place in the crucial New York primary on Tuesday night, after Donald Trump and John Kasich, receiving just 14.5 per cent of the vote.

Mr Trump gathered 60.5 per cent of the vote. The Empire State Building turned red for Mr Trump and blue for Hillary Clinton, who beat Bernie Sanders.
