US navy jet crashes in residential Virginia

A US navy jet crashed in Virginia today with the two pilots aboard believed to have ejected before the impact, according to reports.

Pictures from the scene show black smoke billowing from near some buildings but there are no reports of any injuries on the ground

The Virginian-Pilot newspaper quotes a spokesman for Naval Air Force Atlantic who said the F/A-18 Hornet crashed.

Reports suggested the jet crashed into an apartment building in Virginia.

The navy confirmed on its official Twitter account that both pilots ejected. They were being treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The area near the crash site has a large concentration of military bases, including Naval Station Norfolk, the world's largest naval base.
