A whole three years ago - a period of time that now feels like a lifetime - Donald Trump pondered a run for the governorship of New York. He apparently thought it might be a springboard to the White House.
Now, it it has been reported that his eldest son, a man whom, with his younger brother, is overusing the president’s business interests, may also fancy taking a run at the job himself.
Having previously told supporters of his father at a fundraising event in Florida that he missed the buzz of frontline politics, Donald Trump Jr apparently revealed to members of a private gun club he would like to follow his father into elected office, and that the New York governorship was attractive to him.
The New York Post said Mr Trump’s son told the F6 Labs gun club in Hicksville, New York, he did not believe the senate or house were for him. Rather, it was the governor’s mansion in Albany, currently occupied by Democrat Andrew Cuomo, that appealed.
“Don Jr said he is interested in running for office, such as governor of New York, but the position of mayor of New York would be less interesting to him,” a guest at the event told the newspaper.
Mr Trump Jr apparently said: “Do I want to be behind the scenes and be a mouthpiece and fight back against crazy liberal media? Maybe. Going back to doing deals is boring after 18 months. The politics bug bit me.”
Mr Trump did not indicate when he might run. Mr Cuomo is up for re-election in 2018, although he has also been named as a possible presidential candidate for 2020.Reuse content
