A uniformed military officer has used the impeachment inquiry to denounce “vile character attacks” on other witnesses, following a Donald Trump Twitter rant .
Lt Col Alexander Vindman , director for European affairs at the national security council, who was on the president’s July 25 phone call with the leader of Ukraine, said it was “improper” for him to demand a foreign government investigate a US citizen and political opponent.
It was for that reason he raised his concerns about the president’s request to Volodymyr Zelensky.
“I never thought I would be sitting here testifying in front of this committee and the American public, about my actions. When I reported my concerns, my only thought was to act properly and to carry out duty,” Lt Col said on Tuesday.
He added: “I want to take a moment to recognise the courage of my colleagues who have appeared and are scheduled to appear before this committee.”

With a Russian-backed insurgency in the east of his country, and the Crimea region seized by Vladimir Putin in 2014, Zelensky will have been eager to please his American counterpart, who had suspended vital military aid before their phone conversation. He says there was no pressure on him from Trump to do him the “favour” he was asked for. Zelensky appeared at an awkward press conference with Trump in New York during the United Nations general assembly, looking particularly uncomfortable when the American suggested he take part in talks with Putin.

However, Trump announced that Pence had had “one or two” phone conversations of a similar nature, dragging him into the crisis. Pence himself denies any knowledge of any wrongdoing and has insisted that there is no issue with Trump’s actions. It has been speculated that Trump involved Pence as an insurance policy - if both are removed from power the presidency would go to Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, something no Republican would allow.

It is thought that Perry will step down from his role at the end of the year.

Trump says that Biden pressured Ukraine to sack a prosecutor who was investigating an energy company that Biden’s son Hunter was on the board of, refusing to release US aid until this was done. However, pressure to fire the prosecutor came on a wide front from western countries. It is also believed that the investigation into the company, Burisma, had long been dormant.

He has since suggested that asking foreign leaders for favours is simply how international politics works. Separately the Associated Press has reported that they were both involved in efforts to replace the management of Ukraine's gas company, Naftogaz, with new bosses who would steer lucrative contracts towards companies controlled by Trump allies. There is no suggestion of any criminal activity in these efforts.

Canadian-born Yovanovitch was attacked on Twitter by Donald Trump while she was actually testifying, giving Democrats the chance to ask her to respond. She said she found the attack “very intimidating”. Trump had already threatened her in his 25 July phone call to the Ukrainian president saying: “She’s going to go through some things.” Yovanovitch said she was “shocked, appalled and devastated” by the threat and by the way she was forced out of her job without explanation.

The officer also appeared to directly rebut an an attack Mr Trump made last Friday on social media against Marie Yovanovitch, a former US ambassador to Ukraine. He said everywhere she had served “went bad”.
“I want to state that the vile character attacks on these distinguished and honourable public servants is reprehensible,” said Lt Col Vindman.
“It is natural to disagree and engage in spirited debate, this has been our custom since the time of our Founding Fathers, but we are better than callow and cowardly attacks.”
Fox News hosts shout at each other in furious on-air row over Donald Trump impeachment The testimony of the 44-year old officer, who told the committee he spoke Russian, Ukraine and a “little bit of English”, carries particular weight because was was among a handful of officials who listened directly as Mr Trump spoke to Mr Zelensky.
Republicans have denounced previous witnesses as having no direct knowledge and relying on “hearsay”.
“The uniform I wear today is that of the United States army. The members of our all volunteer force are made up of a patchwork of people from all ethnicities, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds who come together under a common oath to protect and defend the constitution of the United States of America,” said Lt Col Vindman.
“We do not serve any particular political party, we serve the nation. I am humbled to come before you today as one of many who serve in the most distinguished and able military in the world.”
Democrats launched a formal impeachment inquiry after a whistleblower alleged Mr Trump had improperly asked Mr Zelensky to launch an investigation into Joe Biden and his son, in exchange for the release of US military aide and a state visit to Washington.
Mr Trump has denied any wrongdoing and dismissed the proceedings as a “witch hunt”.
