Teenage girls in Utah 'scream f*** n*****s' in Instagram video

Video of five teeange girls appearing to scream a racial slur has gone viral, sparking outcry from the NAACP and an investigation by their school.

The girls, students of Weber High School in Pleasant View, Utah, are believed to have recorded the video a year ago. The footage appears to show the girls laughing and screaming “f*** n****s” into the camera.

The video went viral after one of the students shared it on social media this week. Other students noticed the footage and shared it as well, with many expressing their distaste.

Weber High has confirmed that the girls are students at the school, and that three of the five are cheerleaders. While the video was not made on school grounds, the students could still be disciplined for violating the school’s code of conduct, district spokesperson Lane Findlay said in a statement.

The students were asked to stay home from school on Tuesday and Wednesday while the district investigated, Mr Findlay told The Independent.

"There's a process here, and we’ve said all along that we’re taking this very seriously. With that being said, students still have a right to due process," Mr Findlay said, adding that there is a "spectrum" of action the school could take, from simple verbal counselling to expulsion.

Mr Findlay said the school had received countless emails and phone calls about the situation. He added that there were many "ugly" remarks being made about the girls on social media.

"This is wrong, its inexcusable. We’ve said that all along," he said of the video. "But with that being said, they’re still students – they’re still kids in a way – and kids do stupid things from time to time."

Jeanetta Williams, the president of the local NAACP conference, disagreed.

“They knew what they were doing it. They did it, and they posted it,” she told the Associated Press. “If they had any type of concerns about other people’s feelings or about what other people would think they wouldn’t have been laughing.”

Ms Williams added that she wants the cheerleaders suspended from the squad, and the other students to be disciplined in one of their activities.

“A strong lesson needs to be sent to them,” she said. “It seems like our work is never done.”

The students appear to have deleted their social media accounts or set them to private. Screenshots obtained by BuzzFeed News, however, appear to show the teen who originally posted the video briefly returning to Instagram to post her response.

“I’m back,” she wrote, according to the screenshots. “You bitches really tried to get me suspended from my high school, huh?! Lmfao, pathetic.”

In comments under the original post, she added: “You’re all f***ing stupid. I’m not a f***ing racist. The person I’m closest to is black and have always loved them. Just thought I would set things straight.”

The account has since been deleted.
