Police were called to a hotel earlier this month after the Nobel laureate and Holocaust scholar Elie Wiesel, 78, was roughed up during a peace conference. Although he was not injured, the incident is being investigated as a possible anti-Semitic attack.

The assailant approached the author in a lift at San Francisco's Argent Hotel and requested an interview. The man then insisted it be conducted in a hotel room and dragged him out of the lift. Mr Wiesel screamed, and the man fled.
