Willie Nelson marked the favourite holiday of pot smokers – 4/20 – by announcing his plans to release his own line of marijuana in Colorado and Washington, the two US states where recreational use of pot is legal.

The country music star and noted marijuana maven said he hopes that “Willie’s Reserve” will be the best pot available on the market, according to the Associated Press. It would be grown and sold in Colorado and Washington.

Mr Nelson, 81 years old, says he will collaborate with master growers to define standards for the strain. He is a long-time supporter of marijuana for personal use and has spoken of its benefits for hemp production.

“I will make sure it's good or it won't be on sale,” Mr Nelson told Rolling Stone. “There should be a menu just like in a restaurant because there's so many different kinds of pot that do many different things. It's a good idea to have everything labelled for what it does, what it don't do [and] how powerful it is.”

Mr Nelson says he is also planning to launch stores with a wide range of products, including edibles.

“It's just a matter of time in this country before it's legal," he said. "I feel like I bought so much, it's time to start selling it back.”
