A large convoy of government troops and artillery moved into northern Nicaragua after rearmed Contra rebels kidnapped dozens of officials who had gone to offer them amnesty, AP reports from Managua.

The hostage-takers, rearmed rebels who fought the Sandinistas in the 1980s, want Antonio Lacayo, a presidential aide, and the army chief Humberto Ortega to quit. The guerrillas released one of three MPs they had kidnapped.
