This bridge has weight restrictions
An overloaded lorry was so heavy that it crashed through the middle of a bridge at the weekend in Changchun, capital of northeast China’s Jilin Province.
The accident happened at 3:30am as the lorry was transporting a full load of steel pipes from Henshui, in northern China’s Hebei Province.
Driving onto Dongrong Bridge, the surface of the bridge gave way and collapsed into the Yitong river below it, taking the lorry with it. Fortunately the river was shallow enough for the lorry and its passengers not to become submerged underwater.
The lorry created a 14 x 5 metre hole on the bridge, and the two people in the lorry were treated for fractures and head injuries.
The local traffic bureau said the lorry was severely overloaded with steel pipes, and had a total weight of 89 tons, despite signs stating the maximum weight for the bridge was15 tons.
