This week Japan unveiled a new $1.2bn warship, its largest since the Second World War.

With its massive size and flight deck, it has raised concerns that it might be upgraded from a destroyer to a full-blown aircraft carrier, contravening the country's constitution which prohibits offensive weaponry.

But how big is it, and what are the other giants of the sea with which it will be competing?

This gallery shows some of the biggest warships in the world, as well as some future plans (particularly from China) that might make the new Izumo look not so special after all.
