A move to create a new state in southern India sparked a violent backlash yesterday, as opponents of the idea burned buses and held strikes.

The decision to create the state of "Telangana" was announced on Wednesday; more than 20 ministers and 140 members of the local legislature have since resigned in opposition. The proposed state capital, Hyderabad, a major centre for the software industry, has also been disrupted by the unrest.
