A giant Nasa research balloon crashed on take-off in the Australian outback yesterday, overturning an SUV and narrowly missing bystanders.
The 121-metre balloon, which was not manned, and its heavy load of expensive scientific equipment broke from a mooring and dragged across the desert for about 500 metres near Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. No one was injured.
