Indonesia will guarantee the safety of all Australians living in the country and its embassy in Jakarta after a flag-burning row between the two countries, Reuter reports.

The embassy has said it was concerned for the safety of its staff after Indonesian protesters burned two Australian flags and one man entered the embassy grounds in retaliation for the burning of Indonesian flags in Australia in the past three weeks.

The flag-burnings in Australia were in protest against Indonesia's rule over the former Portuguese colony of East Timor, which it invaded in 1975 and annexed the following year.
