Bomb kills 22 in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO (Reuter) - At least 22 people were killed and 40 wounded when a bomb hidden inside a can fixed to a bicycle exploded in a crowded marketplace at Sainthamarathu in eastern Sri Lanka.

A senior army officer said it was planted by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam guerrillas, who are fighting for a separate Tamil homeland in the island's north and east.

Sri Lanka's Supreme Court unanimously rejected yesterday an opposition petition to declare the 1988 election of President Ranasinghe Premadasa null and void because widespread violence prevented many people voting.
