Burma frees 92 political prisoners
Wednesday 01 July 1992
RANGOON (AP) - Burma's military government has released 92 more political prisoners, including three menbers of the leading pro-democracy party, the official 'Working Peoples Daily' reported yesterday.
Since 24 April, when releases began, 277 detainees have been freed, including former Prime Minister Nu and 17 leaders of the National League for Democracy, the party headed by the Nobel Prize-winner Aung San Suu Kyi, who is under hpouse arrest in the Burmese capital. The junta has made no moves to free Mrs Suu Kyi. Analysts regard the moves as little more than cosmetic and have noted that all real power remains in military hands.
