Clinton's bid to buy up guns

BILL CLINTON has unveiled a plan to buy back guns to take firearms off the streets. The President's $15m (pounds 9.5m) initiative follows the success of similar schemes in several US cities.

In Washington DC last month, more than 2,000 weapons were handed in.

Buying back guns is politically more acceptable than banning them. Police departments will be given $500,000 to buy guns at a suggested price of $50 each. After being purchased, the guns will be destroyed.
