Desert victory for Clinton

Washington - The Senate has delivered an environmental victory to President Bill Clinton by resisting a Republican filibuster and approving a bill to make eight million acres of California desert the largest federally protected wilderness area in the United States outside Alaska, writes Rupert Cornwell.

The vote could preserve a crucial California seat for the Democrats this autumn. The measure was virtually the only important bill to survive the Republicans' scorched-earth obstructionism.
