The retired pathologist Jack Kevorkian surrendered to police to face charges of violating Michigan's controversial assisted suicide law, Reuter reports from Royal Oak, Michigan.

Prosecutors said they would seek a high cash bond in the light of Dr Kevorkian's repeated attempts to violate the ban on assisted suicides. Since the law was enacted in the summer, Dr Kevorkian has helped four people to commit suicide.
