PARIS (Reuter) - An Algerian special court yesterday sentenced six people to jail terms ranging from one to eight years on charges including setting up an armed group and smuggling arms, the official news agency APS said.

They were also convicted of helping Algerians return home after guerrilla training in Afghanistan. Some 34 appeared for trial at a special court in the western city of Oran. Ten of the group were given one-year suspended sentences and 18 were acquitted. Algeria's three special courts - in Algiers, Oran and Constantine - have in the past issued scores of death sentences.
